Answer vs Solution

Let’s talk about situations in which having the answer and having the solution are two different things. It’s important to differentiate between the two when cases like these arise. Having the answer typically means giving good advice and pointing someone in the right direction. Having the solution is something that solves the particular problem in question.

Looking at both of these from the outside, it would seem that having the solution would be far more valuable to someone than having the answer, but this really isn’t the case. Quite often the person with the problem assigns the same level of value to both the answer and the solution. This is pretty interesting, but it gets better.

To take this is a step further in some cases the person with the problem assigns more value to the answer than the solution. There is trust that gets built when someone has the answers. This “someone” doesn’t have to be limited to an individual it could be a company as well. This builds a strong bond where you will have customers/friends/associates for life. Think about summing up the following statement, “I always go to <insert name here>, they always have the answer”.

I think for a company or a freelancer this can be hard to grasp. We often make our money off of providing solutions. It can seem that pointing someone in the right direction or to another entity to make the money is somehow counterproductive, but this really isn’t the case. No individual or company can be everything to everyone. It’s just not possible. Taking opportunities where you aren’t set up to be successful just because you don’t someone else to get work is a losing proposition. It will not serve you well in the long run.

It’s always best to create partnerships and maximize the success of your customers. They will appreciate you for it and in the long run, you will be more successful because you have built that trust with your friends and customers. The role of trusted advisor is trusted for a reason. Maximize this in your business and personal life, increase collaboration, and the success will follow.
